Woburn's 9-game win streak comes to an abrupt end By By STEVE ALGERI news@woburnonline.com WOBURN The Tanners win streak over Winchester finally came to an end after nine straight wins. The Sachems took it to Woburn on Thanksgiving Day, 34-10, before 3000 fans who turned out for the 104th meeting between the two schools on a nice morning for football at Woburn High. It just was not a typical Woburn High football season in 2008 as the Tanners finished 3-8 after yesterday's setback. Despite a few moments in yesterday's game where the Tanners had some hope, the Sachems made sure the Tanners did not seriously threaten. Winchester quarterback Matt Mangano scored a rushing touchdown and threw for two others as he sparked a dominant offensive effort by the Sachems. Winchester outgained Woburn, 458-154, in total offense. Woburn's scoring came in the form of a 24-yard field goal from John Dixon and then a 61-yard touchdown pass thanks to a bit of trickery. Receiver Brenden McAllister took a lateral pass from quarterback Brian Murray. McAllister then in turn threw a strike to Dixon who got behind the Winchester coverage. Dixon did the rest by finding his way into the end zone which cut into the Winchester lead at 20-10 at the time. But, that was it for the Woburn highlights in the game. Another Woburn highlight occurred at halftime when the No. 14 of Tanner great Ed "Tanjo" Foley was retired in a 10-minute halftime ceremony. Foley was a three-sport All-Scholastic athlete at Woburn High (Class of 1962), specializing in football, basketball and baseball. Foley's No. 14 is the third retired number in football at Woburn High, joining the No. 34 worn by Joe Castiglione and the No. 22 worn by the late John O'Brien.
