Contested races looming for two legislative seats
By GORDON VINCENT news@woburnonline.com

WOBURN - Two of the four seats representing Woburn in the state Legislature will be contested this fall, after the date to submit nomination papers to the Secretary of State passed this week.

In the 4th Middlesex Senate district, incumbent James Marzilli, D-Arlington, is being challenged for the Democratic nomination by Arlington Selectman John Hurd and Kenneth Donnelly, an Arlington resident and former Lexington firefighter.

The nominee will then face former state representative and Billerica selectman Brion Cangiamila in the general election.

Marzilli won a special election in November and succeeded former Sen. Robert Havern, who resigned in August of 2007.

In a hotly-contested Democratic primary, Marzilli defeated three other candidates, including Natale and Donnelly, before besting Cangiamila in the final election.

The 4th Middlesex Senate district includes wards 1 and 3-7 in Woburn, along with all of Burlington, Billerica, Arlington and five precincts in Lexington.

In the 30th Middlesex district in the House, incumbent Patrick Natale will face three challengers, including City Council member James Dwyer in the Democratic party's primary on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The winner earns the nomination and advances to general election on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to face two unaffiliated candidates, Kris Burgess and James Fletcher.

There are no Republicans entered in the race to represent the 30th District, which includes Wards 2-6 in Woburn along with precincts 2, 3 and 5 in Reading and Precinct 3 in Stoneham.

Natale is seeking a third 2-year term in the Legislature. Dwyer is current serving his second term as Ward 4 Alderman on the City Council.

Running unopposed is Sen. Patricia Jehlen, D-Somerville, in the 2nd Middlesex district, which includes Ward 2 in Woburn.

Also unopposed this fall is state Rep. Jay Kaufman, D-Lexington, whose 15th Middlesex District includes wards 1 and 7 in Woburn.

Other contested races on the general election ballot in November are for U.S. President and Vice-President, U.S. Senate (John Kerry's seat), U.S. Representative (Edward Markey's seat), Governor's Council, and Middlesex Register of Probate.

The deadline to register to vote in the September primary is Aug. 27. Woburn residents who are not yet registered to vote may do so at the City Clerk's office at City Hall.
