New Joyce, WMHS asst. principals are introduced
By PATRICK BLAIS news@woburnonline.com

WOBURN - The city's School Committee recently introduced new WMHS Asst. Principal Ralph Deldon as well as Douglas Nebel, who has been tapped to fill the same role at the Joyce Middle School.

During their most recent meeting, the education board greeted Deldon and Nebel, who will replace outgoing WMHS Asst. Principal Maryann Andrews and Joyce Asst. Principal Thomas Qualey, respectively.

Andrews announced her retirement from the school system earlier last year, while Qualey was selected to replace former Joyce Middle School Principal Spencer Mullin.

Mullin departed the post this spring to become Dracut's Supt. of Schools.

Deldon, whose has acted as Woburn's summer school principal since 2001, is a 14-year science teacher within the city's school district.

According to the Billerica resident, he began his career as an educator in 1972, when he was employed as a science and math instructor.

However, due to a budget crisis, the 25-year-teaching veteran was forced to depart Watertown in 1986. He then began a short stint in the private sector as a manager for a Burlington mortgage business.

"I was very fortunate to come back to my love of teaching in Woburn about 14 years ago," explained Deldon. "I'm excited. Maryann has worked with me for the past several months [and given me] an A to Z crash course."

Nebel, who just wrapped-up his first year of teaching at the Joyce, began his teaching career in 2001, where he was employed as a special education instructor in Lexington.

In 2003, after working for about a year in a Lawrence Middle School, the Chelmsford resident started a new job in Stoneham, where he was employed as a seventh grade science teacher for four years.

Nebel has also served as the program director for the Manchester Sailing Association since 2002.

"I came over to Woburn not knowing what to expect, but I found myself in a place where I fit in very well," the new Joyce administrator recalled. "I'm really looking forward to this next step."

"It's a great training ground," Nebel said of his sailing instructor experience. "I think it helped me prepare for this role, on a much smaller scale."
