WOBURN - A Lexington Street man was charged with kidnapping from his hospital bed at Lahey Clinic on Sunday after he allegedly forced his bound girlfriend to swallow an unspecified number of prescription pills and then slit his wrist open.

According to police reports, the 34-year-old suspect, who was found lying unconscious on his living room floor, was transported to the area hospital at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday after his ex-girlfriend reportedly wrestled her bound wrists and legs free and contacted authorities, foiling the Lexington Street man's purported attempt to kill the both of them.

Following initial investigations into the incident by both local detectives and Mass. State Police officials, the suspect was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of domestic assault and battery.

The 32-year-old victim, who complained of feeling nauseous from the pills that were forced down her throat, declined medical attention at the scene, say police.

According to the victim, her ex-boyfriend, who was reportedly drinking alcohol and possibly doing drugs on Sunday, became enraged when she asked him to leave at approximately 5 p.m. because her son was expected to return to the residence.

The 32-year-old victim recalled being thrown to the bed by the 34-year-old, who then grabbed a knife from the bedroom closet and held it to her neck and chest.

According to police, the suspect repeatedly threatened to kill the woman if she didn't stop screaming, but was interrupted by a visitor at the door. When he left the bedroom to get rid of the guest, the 32-year-old called 911 on her cell-phone and left the phone open on the floor.

However, the victim told police that the Lexington Street man discovered the phone upon his return, and again became enraged, smashing the device against the bedroom wall.

He then bound the woman's arms and legs, the victim alleges, and forced her to swallow an unspecified number of prescription pills. The suspect reportedly ensured that the medication was ingested by ordering the woman to drink a glass of water and then shining a flashlight in her mouth.

According to police, the Lexington Street resident then cut the woman's hair off, and made numerous references to Romeo and Juliet.

After reportedly saying, "we're going to die together," and asking the victim who should go first, the 34-year-old slit his wrist open with the knife and left the room, stumbling around the residence before lying face-up on the living room floor, police say.

The woman was able to struggle free of her bounds, but apparently cleaned up some blood that was smeared all over the dwelling, so that her son wouldn't see it, according to police reports.

Police say that when the victim realized that her ex-boyfriend had a weak pulse, she then contacted authorities for help.

Officer Brian McManus was the first responder at the crime scene. Woburn Det. Beth Higgins is leading the continuing investigation into the incident.
