Wakefield police try to ID victim
By RYAN LAROCHE news@woburnonline.com

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield Police are searching for a suspect wanted for a hit and run, which lead to the death of an unidentified woman.

According to reports, Monday, August 25, at 8:58 p.m., Lt. Mark Pherson received several 911 calls reporting that a pedestrian had been struck on Greenwood Street near the Melrose line.

Two witnesses reported the victim was in the street when the suspect struck her, then left the area.

Skid marks left on the road have since lead police to believe the victim was dragged approximately a quarter of a mile before being dislodged from the vehicle.

The suspect's vehicle was described as a green or tan Audi with darkened windows, headed north on Greenwood Street.

The victim, who was believed by police to have been alone at the time, was transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

She had no identification on her, but was described as being about 40 years old and around five-feet five-inches tall, heavyset, with brown hair, wearing a long sleeve white sweatshirt, jeans, and brown hiking type sneakers.

Police are actively searching for any information on the case. Chief of Police Richard Smith noted that a registry search was completed looking for vehicles that match the description of the one involved in the accident.

"We are tracking down every Audi," Chief Smith mentioned.

Police are also checking any and all video of the scene, as well as local car washes and other auto-related places, as the vehicle would most likely may have sustained front end damage.

Chief Smith also called for assistance from local residents when he said, "A couple of people out there know something and we hope we can appeal to their good conscience."

Streets in the area were closed off after the incident, but were re-opened at 2 a.m. Those streets are home to mostly residential buildings, so police believe the woman may have lived in the area.

As of Tuesday morning's publication deadline, no one has come forward to identify the woman, leaving both hers and the suspect's identify a mystery.

According to Chief Smith, "It's rare to have to ID both the victim and the suspect."

Wakefield Police are being assisted by the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, specifically Sergeant Deborah Ryan and Trooper David Timperoi.

They are also working with the DA's office and District Attorney Jessica Noble.

Chief Smith asked anyone with any information regarding the accident to come forward. The police are accepting anonymous tips at 781-246-6321.
