Pay raises approved by council
By GORDON VINCENT news@woburnonline.com

WOBURN - The City Council voted at its recent meeting to approve pay raises for the city's election workers and some police personnel.

Police matrons (citizens who guard prisoners in the cells at police headquarters) will receive a $2 per hour raise to $14.17. Reserve police officers (usually patrolmen who have not yet finished academy training) will receive a $2.30 per hour raise to $15.70, while school crossing guards will receive a $5.15 per hour increase to $14.

Election workers will receive a $20 stipend for attending training classes. Inspectors will have their pay increase from $80 to $100. Wardens will receive an additional $35 increase to a stipend of $220 for each election they work. A clerk will receive another $25 raise to $175.

Substitute election workers who attend training sessions will receive $20 during each election cycle. Each election requires about 140 workers (10 per precinct), with about 20 substitutes who are on call.

A financial appropriation for the pay raises was approved last month.

The council's vote at its Aug. 12 meeting was required to change the sections of the municipal code in which the pay rates are set.

LukOil - Continued until a meeting in September was a public hearing for a petition from Fabio DeSouza, who is seeking an auto repair component at a LukOil gas station at 317 Montvale Ave. in East Woburn.

The council may end up considering DeSouza's petition in tandem with another special permit application from Robert Khouzami for the sale of used vehicles at the same site.

Khouzami's petition was given a first reading and set up for a public hearing.

131 Main St . - Approved was a zoning change from a residential classification (R-2) to Business Neighborhood for a parcel at 131 Main St. in the South End.

Ann and James Catania sought the change in order to market their property for a possible sale. The Catanias' home is surrounded by small businesses on either side and across the street.

Alderman at-large Paul Denaro asked about a potential issue with line of site visibility. Ward 3 Alderman Scott Galvin noted any new building would have to be at least 25 feet from the street.

"It (visibility) isn't going to be any worse than what's there now," said Galvin.

Peck's - Without discussion, the council approved a "relatively minor modification," according to attorney John McElhiney, to a site plan for the Peck's, Inc., site at 891 Main St., a former gas station just north of Ferullo Field.

In a memo to the council, McElhiney wrote six parking spaces and "two jutting island areas" will be eliminated to create "a much more functional and practical design" than the previous version approved as part of the special permit.

The location is scheduled for a "gourmet" meals to go type establishment.
